Music licensing & commercial playback

Understanding PRS, PPL, and why curated background music matters.

Simplicity and compliance

How licensing works with Stylish Ambience

Two separate licences apply. Here is what Stylish Ambience covers — and what your venue is responsible for.

What Stylish Ambience covers

Stylish Ambience holds licences covering the music service itself — the right to programme, curate, and stream the music content to venues. This is managed through an authorised PRS & PPL supplier and is included as part of your subscription.

  • Licensing for the music service and content distribution
  • Managed through an authorised third-party PRS & PPL supplier
  • Included in your monthly subscription — no separate arrangement needed for the service

What your venue is responsible for

UK law requires venues to hold their own public performance licence to play music in a public-facing commercial space. This is separate from the music service licence and must be obtained directly by the venue.

  • Your venue requires its own PRS & PPL public performance licence
  • This is standard for all UK venues playing music publicly — pubs, restaurants, hotels, and bars
  • Stylish Ambience is not the licensing authority and does not provide venue public performance licences

Most venues already hold the required licences as part of normal operations. If you are unsure, visit prsformusic.com or ppluk.com.

Operational reality

Consumer streaming vs venue environments

Why consumer platforms are not operationally equivalent for venues.

Consumer streaming services are built for personal listening. Venues need control, scheduling, consistency, and environment design—none of which consumer platforms offer in a way suited to commercial hospitality.

Commercial playback requires daypart-aware programming, energy control (Boost/Chill), event modes, and multi-site management. Staff need simplicity; managers need oversight. Consumer apps are not designed for these operational realities.
